Post Where to get started...? (Formerly "Where to buy Redcat?")
Forgive me if I have posted this in a less than desirable place...

I am looking to purchase a Redcat Volcano EPX 1:10 Truck... Where can I purchase one in Calgary? I've found several places online however the shipping charges are atrocious. I am hoping to find a shop in town that carries them.

Thanks!

Edit: Updated the topic title.

No worries. We're pretty easy going here.
I don't think that anyone sells Redcat locally. Others will correct me.
If that's so, Vancouver may be the closest:

Hmm that's too bad. I found a place in New Westminster, BC as well. Shipping costs way more than I'd like to pay.

Any suggestions for a comparable truck I can buy locally?

Wow .. that thing actually look very nice!

How about the Savage XS? may be slightly smaller, but look rock solid, great value too! (~ $320?) and I bet it will be more durable then red cat.

I'm looking for something that's a good start... Not too expensive and not super cheap. I read a bunch of comments about this truck and I am drawn to it. I don't really want to spend more than $200 because I'm not sure I'll get enough use out of it where I can see spending more money.

That makes good sense Pliskit, but as we all know... This is not a cheap hobby to begin with.

If you buy something cheap to start with, you will either spend as much in parts, spend time fixing it, or not be able to get parts locally.

If you spend that little bit extra, you will have quality to start with, places to get parts locally, and support from people in the community to help with any issues you may have.

I am not leaning one way or the other, as I don't mind ordering parts online or having a small waiting time for some things. I may be able to buy the part in Calgary,

But I am also able to get alot of it online with a 10 day wait at half the cost.

That being said, Both Redcat and HPI are good choices. Parts are going to break, You can count on it.

Tons of help online with both of the suggested trucks, but as you see you will be ordering parts for the Redcat if needed. (When needed, not if)

Not being able to pick up suspension arms, links, certain style mounts around town, you will have a tougher time with it.

The HPI truck suggested by .CP is a great choice, I think Ted and a few others have a few of them. It might be a smaller scale, and not owning one I am not sure about it.

Just ask more questions, I like them, but I stick with 1/10th scale and larger so far. So far, hehe. I would love one of the XS Flux trucks.

So, I have rambled on enough. Did not mean to make this response a freakin book. Maybe post up a few more questions to help get your answer.

Hope I am correct in my thinking, if not I am sure someone can rectify it. I am always open to better ideas and/or solutions.

Post Re: Where to buy Redcat?
When I was a kid my brother and I had an RC car that our older cousins gave us. They set us up with batteries, a few parts, and we used it all the time. Eventually, it no longer worked. I've got a bit of Christmas money and figured it might be fun to get a truck and have some fun.

My dad sent me an RC helicopter for Christmas, but I have yet to try and fly it. It's a 4 channel and too big to use in the house. Plus, it scares the rubbish out of our kitty. One day when it's not windy we'll get it going.

I am looking to get a truck 1/10 size. Electric. Durable as possible. Finding parts locally is a plus, but I don't mind ordering online. I'd order the truck online if I saw shipping quotes that were less than $60 for the truck. I'd be concerned about the safety of the truck in the hands of a delivery person. My helicopter survived, but I'm still skeptical.

I am slightly concerned about not buying exactly what I may eventually want... I'd hate to buy a Yamaha and decide I was a Taylor a couple months later. It's usually safer to buy and trade up than buy big and realize I am just not that into it. Hmm...

The Savage XS is a nice looking little truck. It's a bit smaller than I was looking at. What are the pros/cons for smaller trucks vs bigger trucks?

I guess I am just trying to figure out where to start. It seems like there are so many options out there. I like the Redcat Volcano.... I like that HPI Savage XS... I was hoping to pick up a truck this coming weekend, but I am having trouble figuring out exactly where to start. How did you guys get started?

The HPI Savage XS RTR seems good .. and solid ..

You can google some review!

Parts are easy to find and cheap .. as Traxxas, but this XS seems better value then the 1/16 E revo (which is great, but about the same price as the Savage XS)

Should be a solid truck too .. with metal gear .. (save you a lots in long run)

http://www.hpiracing.com/kitinfo/106571/

~ $320 at PM I belive, if you want it super fast, need to invest in lipo battery and lip charger, but I bet with 8.4v (if it fit?) nimh, it is still fast and fun!

Yes, you can buy cheaper truck .. say ~ $200 or so, but if you want to upgrade to brushless, this XS comes with nice ~ $170 Mamba ESC+motor, and then if you want to upgrade to 2.4G, another $100 or so .. (also water proof servo, not bad shocks .. etc .. )

I plan to get one for spring ...

Go PM etc to take a look! :D

(You may end up with a LOSI MINI 8IGHT .. lol)

I have to agree with Diamond Dave,,,in the past I have cheaped out, only to find out it cost me twice as much to get my vehicle to same standard as the slightly upgraded one,,,and then after all the money was spent and wanted to move up realized that this stuff has absolutley NO RE-SALE value,,,lol,,,I think thats why we all have so much of it taking space in the basement,,lol,,,

I know up front its a bit pricy, but a good quality vehicle will bring more satisfaction,,,all the way down to being able to run to a local hobby shop to pick up that $2.00 part so you can keep running with your buds the rest of the weekend.

just my 0.02

And yes,,,this hobby is nothing more than a bottomless money pit!!!!!,,,,,LOL

What do those batteries and chargers run at in terms of price? From what I read, it only takes LiPo...?

According to PM's website, they are out of stock on the XS. So it may need to wait, I just figured this weekend would be good since I have Sunday off from work and the weather has been pretty decent. *knock on wood*

I wanted to get a decent idea of where to start before going to a store. I like the idea of a good solid truck that will last a long time and not need replacing early on. I don't want to go super overboard and buy the best one there is. I don't want to be the amateur golfer that buys the $3000 golf clubs. Just looking to get back into something that I had fun with as a kid without getting too crazy.

Does Traxxas have any little trucks that may fit my list of requirements?

I like the idea of being able to get replacement parts easily and for a decent price. The car my brother and I had as kids broke and we never did get it fixed.

LOL Well, I already collect Lego... So what's another expensive hobby? Hah..

Traxxas has lots of good stuff,,check out their website,,,,something fun to get started may be a 2wd Rustler, 4x4 Slash,2wd Slash,,,even keep your eye open for a used one that someone has already upgraded,,,post up in the wanted section to see what people come back with,,,,can usually find everything in the For Sale section,,chargers etc,,,,,

Good idea Craig, Put a wanted ad up, and get some feel for what is out there.

Take some time to research what you want, buying one because it is your day off seems a little rushed.

I've been thinking about it for several months. I had pretty much made up my mind and then decided to see what people who have trucks think before I go buy something. I had hoped to go this weekend, however I am not set on it. The way my job is... a weekend off is rare.

4X4 Slash with a lipo batt and charger. 2WD is ok, but you will like the 4X4 more.

Maybe a tenth scale stadium style truck, check PM Hobby website.

Losi and Team Associated are both very good, Maybe a Traxxas Stampede, or go over the top and buy the E-Maxx with dual motors and lipo, that will be alot of cash.

The Axial Wraith might be a good choice, Speed and jumping mixed with the ability to crawl. I did not think there were that many links.

But here are some choices. Not sure why I looked at some many short course trucks, but they can be fun.

Lots of choices out there .
What do you want to do ?
Crawl ,Do some trail running ?
Or you want something fast ?

1/10 or 1/16

The Savage xs is crazy fast ,tons o power .
A 1/16 revo would be a blast too ,also quick .

As Dave suggested ,Wraith is a cool rig . Trail truck /rock racer / basher

Hey Pliskit,

Just had a quick look at the Redcat Volcano, looks like a lot of truck for little cash, not sure about quality, looks like http://www.AmazingRCstore.com located in Toronto has them in stock for $179.00. Shipping will be around $40.00 its what it cost me last time I had an RC shipped from TO. This fits your budget.

Things to consider when shopping for a new truck:

I would highly suggest getting something with local parts support, things will break and waiting weeks for parts is just a pain.

The included charges with these RTR trucks are a joke and take up to 8 hrs to reach a full charge, higher end charger is highly recommend pm has some starting at $35.00.

Also keep in mind a lot of the trucks like flux, summit, revo, savage-e require 2 batteries to run which add to your total cost and charging time.

I just bought the Traxxas Stampede 4x4 vxl this summer and love it, it was 410.00 from PM but I got a fun-to-bash 4x4 brushless / waterproof (big plus) truck that came with everything i needed right out of the box, and only requires one battery to operate, and is lipo ready when you are. Just upgraded mine to 3s lipo and the thing is a beast. I highly recommend this truck.

Whatever you decide, have fun with it. :beavis:
